A real world NASCAR to keep in mind

I was referring to the fractured OpenID landscape - where Google's OpenID
doesn't work with Facebook or....
When I see the cornacopia of ATM systems all displayed on one ATM screen
(the NASCAR effect you're referring to) I think of a world where competing
'behemoths' can all agree on open standards as a fabric to offer
'inter-operable' functionality to users.
They've figured out how to do that for ATM systems!
So imagine an integrated system 'standard' which combined log-in, membership
in a social network, points in an ecommerce 'bank account' and content
repositories all bundled into one set of services - which is exactly what
Facebook is doing.
Why won't Google and Microsoft also have their own integrated system, where
Yahoo and MySpace and everyone else choose sides and help solidify the
standard.
Isn't this what's going on? Right now we fight each technology standard as
a separate 'battle'. Isn't Facebook laying out an architecture - that almost
requires other 'systems' to offset it?
Aren't we all looking for standards to provide data portability and
inter-operability for users to freely move between systems?
:-)
