Mostly, I think this is just LiveJournal not allowing a login without
already being logged in. They acknowledge this limitation, but haven't
'fixed' it in quite some time now.
I think there might be something to having the browser know that an
OpenID login/transaction is occurring. Perhaps, like when it sees an
https protocol and displays a lock and yellow background in the location
bar... perhaps the browser can detect OpenID strings being passed
around and 'adjust' in some way as to make the 'redirecting' of OpenID a
little less jarring to the unassuming user.
If the browser knows about the OpenID logo (like it knows about RSS),
perhaps it can present the user with an overlay instead of a full
redirect - keeping the 'original' site in view 'behind' the OpenID
verification step(s).
