You should not update the spec_version field from 1_0-ID2 to 1_0-final. The
specification requires a value of 1_0-ID2 or greater, and 1_0-final is not
a valid successor in this versioning scheme.
Here's a breakdown of the versioning used in this context:
- ID2 likely stands for "implementation draft 2," which is a specific
type of pre-release version identifier.
- Other pre-release identifiers, like alpha, beta, and rc (release
candidate), are also standard in versioning schemes.
- When a standard is finalized, the pre-release identifier is removed
entirely. A new, non-pre-release version would be 1_0 or 1.0.0.
A value of 1_0-final is not recognized and may cause compatibility issues
with implementers who expect a standard pre-release marker or a final,
non-suffixed version.
What to do instead
To properly advance the version number:
1. For a stable version: If the standard is final, update the value to
1_0 or 1.0.0, removing the pre-release suffix completely.
2. For a new draft: If you are releasing a new draft, follow the
established versioning pattern, for example, 1_0-ID3.
3. To indicate a release candidate: If this is the last step before a
final release, use a conventional marker like 1_0-rc1.
