Hi. Sorry to have missed the meeting today.

I just got the news that the Data Protection and Digital Information (No.2)
bill that includes digital identity measures was introduced to the UK
Parliament.

   - Secretary of State's statement
   <https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-statements/detail/2023-03-08/hcws617>
   - the details about the bill <https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3430>

Part 2 of the bill secures the reliability of digital verification
services. These deliver on the government's commitment to making digital
identities as trusted and secure as physical documents that are currently
widely accepted as evidence of identity so that people and businesses can
make the most of new technologies with confidence and peace of mind.

According to the email I got, the digital identity measures in the revised
data bill are unchanged from last summer. They

   -

   require the Secretary of State to publish a trust framework of rules and
   establish a register of certified digital verification service providers so
   that users can have the confidence that organisations have been
   independently assessed as compliant with the rules;
   -

   enable the Secretary of State to exercise governance functions in
   relation to the register. In practice, these functions will be undertaken
   by the Office for Digital Identities and Attributes, initially integrated
   within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology; and
   -

   enable public authorities to disclose information to registered
   organisations providing trust-marked services for the purposes of identity
   or eligibility verification.
