Just a couple of observations:
First, I think that it would be good to see this week's website upgrade as
an interim step - and a very good one at that in terms of user experience,
design, new user education, adoption. Hats off to Scott, David, and the
terrific Vidoop team.
Second, pointing out on the How do I get one? page "If you use any of the
following services, you already have your own OpenID:" is seriously helpful
to many users, I bet. Once the OpenID Foundation's work on intellectual
property rights (IPR) is finished (very soon I hope!) then significance of
that list is going to grow and become rather more helpful. The list will be
helpful both in terms of: (i) informing people that in many cases they
already have an OpenID; (ii) showing how broadly OpenID is supported; and
(iii) indicating the range of kinds of options one has to think about.
Third, it seems to me that the OpenID community could see our immediate
conundrum (being fair and open on the one hand while also helping people to
make well considered choices) as an opportunity to develop community-based
reputation, accreditation, and best practices measures/services. As we all
know the OpenID Foundation is committed to the community of all OpenID
supporters, users, developers, champions, etc., so what the OpenID community
develops and embraces, OIDF will gladly utilize.
Finally, let us not "make perfection the enemy of the very good" - it's an
old Murphy's Law, actually. Rather, during this transition phase I believe
there are numerous things that all the stewards of OpenID must strive to
continue to do to avoid favoritism, to avoid poor user experience, and to
help foster the widest possible levels of adoption. For example, we can
continue to link to OpenID related directories, perhaps we can begin to
randomize the list of OPs shown with each requested page view of OPs, and
openid.net can provide warning messages urging users to be mindful in their
choices and that we cannot make any warranties...
cheers,
-bill
