[Marketing] [OpenID] Website Being Updated Today

David,

I understand and the idea of the "keep it simple" test. But first let's back
up to the policy level: is the policy that OpenID.net will provide a link to
any OpenID provider (whether they issue URLs or XRIs) as long as the
provider has a "simple registration process"?

If so, let me suggest the following:

1) Let's agree as a community on what that policy is, i.e., let's capture on
a OpenID.net wiki page the definition of what constitutes a "simple
registration process". This shouldn't take more than a few days. I think
you've already supplied some key points below - I nominate you to post the
first version of the wiki page & the rest of us can comment/edit.

2) Once we have the policy, let's let all the OPs we can know about it,
e.g., post to OpenID General and OpenID Marketing. I'll be glad to forward
that email to the XDI.org-Accredited I-Broker mailing list.

3) Designate a OpenID.net point person (or add a form to the site) where an
OP can submit an application for listing once they have implemented an
OpenID registration process (whether for a URL or an i-name) that meets the
simple registration policy.

4) If the OP meets the criteria, they get listed.

Such an approach would be neutral to all OPs, regardless of whether they
issue URLs or XRIs or both.

How's that sound?

Hey Drummond,

Yeah, this is one of the things which still needs to get worked on. Maybe
linking to http://www.inames.net/register.html is a good way to proceed.

I took a look at the links provided from there though:

 - EZiBroker doesn't seem to let you actually get an i-name, rather just
links you to iwantmynamenow.com.

 - 2idi presents you with a form asking you to choose the price and them an
empty text field, what am I supposed to type in the field? (doesn't meet the
"simple" test)

 - LinkSafe is much better, though submitting the "Search =i-name" button
gives me a SSL certificate error. The "get a free i-name" link goes to a
year old blog post telling you to use their contact form to request one.

 - 1id.com is probably the simplest so far, but you have to know to use the
"Check Availability" box in the top right and to first type "=".

 - =you seems to be even simpler than 1id.com so seems like the best
candidate to link to.

 - INITECH seems to work though shows my password in plaintext, and just
sends me off to PayPal with no real context.

 - CIM3 also seems to work.

 - EnCirca gives me a giant warning which I don't even understand, "Please
Note: These are for defensive registrations only. EnCirca does not support
any services for i-names"

There seems to be a much larger barrier to entry from these i-brokers
compared to one of the URL OpenID providers currently.

What we tried to do was create a sort of multi-step flow.

  1) you might already have one and don't know it

  2) here are some simple and well known providers within the community

  3) want more? look at the list on the wiki where every provider isn't
guaranteed to work (maybe also link to http://www.inames.net/register.html
from this paragraph?)

  4) roll your own, learn about delegation or scripts which help you

So really trying to make it as easy as possible. I wrote a bit more about
this in a message to general@
(http://openid.net/pipermail/general/2007-October/003600.html)

While I really like almost everything about the new look and feel and
content, there's one area where I'm worried about the political position
that it takes. http://openid.net/get/clearly recommends a set of OpenID
providers just by being listed there. And leaves out others simply by not
being listed there. For example, none of the XDI.org-Accredited I-Brokers
that offer i-names (free or paid) are listed there, nor is there even a
reference to the XDI.org directory of i-brokers at
http://www.inames.net/register.html.

As much as we want to make it easy for visitors to obtain an OpenID simply
and easily, my concern is the community taking any position at all with
regard to listing OpenID providers or i-brokers, rather than simply offering
pointers to well known directories or public resources for discovering them.

I know it's not an easy problem to solve, but now that there's a "there
there", it's easier to discuss the tradeoffs.

Hey David, Scott, Vidoop team--

Thanks for all your great efforts today. Fabulous work!

Are there particular things you'd like people to look at first or pay extra
attention to? Are you actually planning on doing more right away -
tomorrow, for example?

cheers,
-bill
