<br>Liberty Alliance has been a leader in doing work in the identity space for a long time - it developed the SAML standard, done really good work around privacy and policy articulation and understanding, they have been very active on working on assurance levels (tracking to NIST (national institute of standards), and doing compliance testing for industry for standards (a company pays to run their software through a series of tests and if they pass they get to say that they are "certified". <br>
<br>I think Kantara is a good place to move the work and community around Liberty forward and expand the openness including broadening work. One of the key needs they address is that large companies doing work together in the standards realm require create spaces to collaborate on things that involve IP needed a place where the IPR rules are articulated up front. They have working groups that support this kind of "clean space" to do work. Quite frankly this need to clear IPR is something all groups (those of little co's and just people) need to deal with it (OpenID was stalled for a long time in its IPR clearing process) and it is in part what OWF is trying to address too. <br>
<br>In the last day because of conversations coming out of this thread they have changed the language on their press releases to reflect that they are a community (rather then "the community"). <br> <br>Since RSA we (Identity Commons) has had a conversation with Kantara about developing a joint statement of values that we share. <br>

<br>This conversation got going again this week at Burton Group Catalyst and I think these values are shared by many of the communities/organizations working in the field (OpenID Foundation, InfoCard Foudnation, OWF, InCommon Federation (in higher education) DataPortability etc) so I am hopeful we can find a way to express/share values across all of these efforts. <br>
<br>One of the Identity Commons groups - ID-Legal is exploring
collaborating with the Privacy Group in Kantara to convene a meeting to
Map the Gap between different identity technologies and the different
legal lenses. <br><br>I think we are seeing a good ecology of groups that provide different kinds of forums and tools for groups working doing technology but also perhaps more importantly as the technology has been innovated in the last several years to address the harder issues of trust, business processes, adoption, problem solving to make this stuff work. I don't think there will ever "be one forum" either but information sharing and collaboration are critical. <br>
<br>And IIW is an open unconference format with no "agenda" other then what everyone who comes brings to the event. <br>

They have lots of "new" working groups cause they are moving all work from
Liberty Alliance (Trade organization) over to the "new org". Look
carefully
at who was not on board with the announcement - none of the web portal
co's
involved in OpenID. Not many people active in the identity community
actually blogged or commented about its formation or are now talking about
all the "new" activity there.
Activity continues to go on in Identity Commons working groups without
much
fanfare but getting lots done (OpenID, Info Cards, OSIS, Project VRM,
Pamela
Project, Higgins Project etc). We just had a meeting here at Burton Group
Catalyst yesterday with OSIS (open source identity systems) that has done

Working Groups that I don't hear about; obviously Google has been
active on its own; finally, there are the separate communities in
which complementary work is being done. If it all feeds back into
OpenID eventually, we have little basis for complaint. We might hope
for more frequent progress updates, but I'm sure something will be
said when there is something to say ;)
Meanwhile, we can use this time to work on our own projects.
