Looks like Microsoft is having major problems. I hit several error pages on my way to retrace your steps. In the end, I was issued http://openid.live-int.com/thisistheplace, but if you visit that URL, you get "invalid host name". That would definitely explain why the dotnetopenauth RP reports that there is no OpenID endpoint there.

Thanks. got a dev-grade liveid, and registered for the openid "alias" service. This part seemed to work fine.

Get endpoint errors; similar to what also occurs at plaxo.
at http://dotnetopenauth.net/Samples/v3.0/OpenIdRelyingPartyWebForms/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fsamples%2fv3.0%2fOpenIdRelyingPartyWebForms%2fMembersOnly%2fDefault.aspx

Provide an OpenID first.
Invalid OpenID URL.
Login failed: No OpenId endpoint found.

Obviously, no point trying delegation flows, yet!
Been experimenting all morning with Microsoft identity platform - in the SDK for identity services (delegated auth for mesh data sources, classical IDP-RP token passing, cloud-hosted IDPs and RPs, WSFed-SAML2 gateways, hosted role mapping, DRM-wrapping of syndicated content, etc). All wonderful stuff, if you are in our business.
