Hey Santosh,

I think there's a broader issue at hand, namely: what type of identifier should OpenID support, in general.

You and I (and others) would like to see email addresses accepted as valid OpenID's, but from a spec perspective, does it really make sense to allow "just one more benighted Identifier"?

I think from a fairness perspective (think of Peter who wants ldap:// Identifiers to be valid OpenID's -- [just kidding, Peter]), and from a "good engineering" perspective, the best path is to get XRD accepted as the Discovery mechansim for OpenID.

Why do I say this? Because XRD will provide a baseline framework for Discovering "meta data" about an Identifier. Once in place, the sky is the limit. OpenID could use email addresses, Jabber ID's, ftp urls...anything where there is a mechanism to "do discovery" on that identifier in order to "discover" which OpenID features that the Identifier supports.

If you haven't already, I suggest reading Eran's great blog posts about Discovery (in general):
http://www.hueniverse.com/hueniverse/2009/03/the-discovery-protocol-stack.html

and more specifically, about XRD:
http://www.hueniverse.com/hueniverse/2009/03/xrd-sneakpeek.html

Hopefully once you do, you'll find that yours and my quest to get email addresses as OpenID's really hinges on 1.) The adoption of XRD; and 2.) A Working Group centered around 2.1 Discovery.

I think that's the place to be directing our energies...

Agree?

David

ps: Please vote on my "community opinion" page if you can:
http://wiki.openid.net/Identifier-and-Discovery-2_1-Questions
I would like to hear an answer to this post from the OpenID foundation
