To repeat, cost of certs is not merely monetary - for example, if an
authority requires you to send them your personal information so you
can register for their "free" service, this is a cost (even if it's one
you wouldn't mind paying).

I think - with or without costs - this is what's expected from
certification authorities. <br>

Imagine a hotel manager advertising "free rooms" - except, when guests
arrive, they are told they'll need to trade sexual favors each night
they stay there. It's not money, so it's still a "free" room,

Disclosing ones identity is part of the certification process usually,
this is not a favor. It's the same like offering hotel rooms without
beds in them (by using your comparison). CAs which offer free certs
aren't requesting any favors, but adherence to their respective CA
policies. Obviously a policy is hard to enforce with unknown identities.<br>

If you want to remain anonymous than you shouldn't get certification -
and everybody shall know that you prefer to remain anonymous. <br>
