There is still a month before a concrete Beta will be released, and an Alpha version is being used to power up OpenID support in PHP PEAR. The Zend Framework has already adopted several of the PEAR subpackages for Crypt and Yadis support in their own component.</span><br><br>The goal is to create a comprehensive OpenID library for PHP5 which can approach a standard solution for PHP5 clients, and which is available under a New BSD License so users are allowed to modify it without falling afoul of any GPL/LGPL like clauses. This, together with a clean source code IP record, are a few of
the concerns the PHP community has had over existing libraries to date. So there is work in this direction.<br><br>At present we're at a 95% mark - remaining tasks include dealing with legacy PHP4 systems on PEAR, refactoring slightly, and passing PEAR proposal acceptance. It is not operational straight from SVN (it's deliberately broken in svn while overhauling HTTP request support), but we have an October release date for Beta. Thereafter it's open season for Extension support.<br><br>I'm not sure if this was the not working library referred to earlier ;). It's been alpha for two months across my four week vacation and September. If there would be a decent library and implementation for PHP in the
same quality and extend like OpenID4Java I'd buy that too. So I guess
that a complete client (and server implementation) for PHP would make
integration with the most popular 'so called Web 2.0" applications even
easier. However whatever was available up to now for PHP doesn't match
OpenID4Java...not even close.<br>

This week i installed the PHP version on IIS, only to find a README
after a decent number of hours (wasn't easy to set up as i have zero
PHP knowledge) that said no authentication or anything was available. I
can understand why for illustration purposes, but the next logical step
is to add this kind of stuff so you can get a full implementation one
can start using.<br>

I looked at the Java version too only to realize it seems to be
similar, so i like your suggestion :)<br>

I had the chance to browse the API a little bit and OpenID4Java looks
extremely promising, specially since it really seems to be up2date
including the various extensions. Hadn't any time to install and do
some coding, which leads me actually to make a suggestion, which some
community member could pick up perhaps:<br>

How about providing a complete client and server implementation with
all the whistle and bells which could be configured in a config or from
DB? I could imagine that once something installable would be available,
it actually would be used much more (including sql scripts etc). I
could also imagine, to provide some hooks for popular forums and blogs,
i.e. redirect authentication to the OpenID4Java client and post the
result back...<br>
<br>
Specially the availability of extensions like Attribute Exchange could
improve the (security) status of OpenID further, meaning that actual
implementations are using it.<br>
