<DIV>I believe the short answer is: OpenID requires a way to resolve the
"identifier" into a provider and an optional delegated identifier to use at that
provider.<BR><BR>The OpenID spec defines "identifier" as http/https URI or XRI
because those are the two forms that have such a method defined in the
spec. As you can see from other traffic on this list, there is at least
one proposal being circulated for defining a method for email
addresses.<BR><BR>Terry<BR></DIV>

k :), so why does openid 2.0 not allow ' <A href='javascript:parent.ComposeTo("joaquin%40netmesh.us%5cx27", "");'>mailto:joaquin@netmesh.us'</A> to
be an "identifier" and why does it also redefine "identifier" as
follows?
"An Identifier is either a "http" or "https" URI, (commonly referred
to as a "URL" within this document), or an XRI (Reed, D. and D.
McAlpin, "Extensible Resource Identifier (XRI) Syntax V2.0," .)
[XRI_Syntax_2.0]."
when RFC 3986 has a perfectly good definition for "identifier" that
the rest of the internet manages to get by with :) i.e.
"An identifier embodies the information required to distinguish what
is being identified from all other things within its scope of
identification. ......."
It seems strange, to me, that openid 2.0 restricts identifiers to a
specific subset of URIs, i.e. http, https and xri. Why is this?
