I disagree. Interop is optional; if a RP sees a compelling need, it
should feel perfectly free to extend the spec for its own use. It may
break its own ability to communicate with other OP's; it cannot break
other RP's this way, only itself. If, on the other hand, the custom
solution not only works but is simple to implement, the RP will
hopefully *also* feel free to contribute its new invention to the
community ;)
AX already permits Arbitrary eXtensions, without needing to supply
each to an "official" namespace. If you, or any other OP (or RP),
would like to experiment with enhancing OpenID so it meets your
needs, and would rather play with "working" code than go through a
several-month process on the lists (with IPR contracts and all that),
. . . DO SO! We have plenty of ideas between us, but working code
(even as a barely functional proof-of-concept) gathers a *lot* more
attention.
