Ongoing use-case that could have benefitted from OpenID:

  . . . who is "joe just joe"? Or *anyone* who claims to have received 
verification that it's harmless? Potentially, the hacker(s) 
responsible, engaging in a disinformation campaign to keep 
internet-only researchers off their guard throughout the weekend. 
When a single nexus becomes THE place to go for further discussion of 
some situation, users end up passive listeners (signup barrier) or 
leave their reputation behind(^1). Maybe on Monday this will explode 
and be someplace popular like Facebook, where a connecting fabric 
isn't *necessary*; for rapid response to burgeoning crises, though 
(before they *become* identifiable crises), OpenID could help Web 1.0 
pretend that it is Web 2.0.

1) or sign up as Chris Messina, but who's going to contact the 
*original* rather than just message him directly through that site? 
Related: how many users will notice that the ones reporting good news 
are all new users - users who, to all indications, have never existed 
before? (Especially with the way that the web's current "series of 
self-contained nodes" model works: it's expected, so noone thinks to 
be suspicious of it.)
