[OpenID] Access Facebook Connect through OpenID?

Kent,

No, it's not possible today. Facebook Connect is based on OAuth 2.0. There's a controversial proposal that would probably make it possible for Facebook Connect to utilize OpenID, but I don't know the state of affairs there, or whether they'd make that migration.

More generally, many or most OpenID providers will not be able to give you those features that you find compelling anyway. Regardless of what happens with protocols, if you intend to accept a wide range of identity sources, then you'll need to change the assumptions about what you can and cannot expect and adjust your application's logic and identity handling accordingly.

Handling two (or more) protocols is a relatively small portion of the workload involved in supporting a range of identity sources. I wouldn't make the protocols a strong criterion in your decision process.

Hope this helps,
Nate.

Subject: [OpenID] Access Facebook Connect through OpenID?

I'm looking into implementing either Facebook Connect or OpenID on my site. Facebook's social aspects, like sharing activity on my site back to their Facebook is very compelling, but I would prefer OpenID's openness and larger userbase.

So, if I implement OpenID would I be able to also use the social aspects of Facebook Connect (assuming that the user has a Facebook account)?

I actually tried to Google this but couldn't find anybody addressing this matter specifically, perhaps because it is not possible.

Thanks in advance.

Kent Wang
