[OpenID] OIDF, Who is your customer?

Involved in the Dutch OpenID chapter and trying to promote the use of openid
I would like to share some thoughts/ feelings.

At the moment we are in the process of starting pilots with some large
committed RP's in NL (AX2 (Verified attributes) and ICAM profile like.
Within our pilot our philosophy is that the committed RP's determine
openid.next (As where consumer groups guard the interest of the individual
consumer). To be successful we need to have more direct lines and support
from OIDF.

For me the goals of the OIDF are not that clear anymore.

- Who is your customer?

- What is his problem?

- What priorities and organizational structure do we need to follow
to solve his problem?

- And how committed is this customer to use our solution if we
solved his problems?

>From recent developments on this list and news announcements I see some
mixed goals:

- OIDF is here to fulfill the Identity Oracle, 7 laws of identity
all the way. In every technical detail. We are developers and like to
develop.

- OIDF is here to make sure US gov is able to use OpenID conform
ICAM. We define an additional OpenID profile that fulfills this needs and
make sure US OP's can fulfill this needs.

- OIDF is here to make sure potential OP's (Google, MS,
PayPal,FaceBook ) can add openid as a value add to their service and this is
the way we need to develop?

Personally my goal for openid always was to make sure RP's and individuals
WORLDWIDE are able to use d-identities in their daily internet practice.

Therefore I think the main focus should be to fulfill the needs of
international committed RP's and individuals, nothing more and nothing less.

Some practical suggestions to support this:

- Define OpenID dedicated face to face meetings (not only by
coincidence because of an IIW event)

- I suggest one of the face to face meetings being in another
continent at least once a year.

- Periodically have international conference calls where people can
call in with a clear agenda and minutes that are posted afterwards to the
group.

- Have videostreaming available at most important openid events.

- Workgroups and initiatives are clear and conform the goals of the
OIDF and follow some strict reporting rules.

- Voting for OpenID.next is done in an international context (where
my personal opinion is that committed RP's that will implement if we deliver
should be involved much more).

If the goal is to make sure RP's and individuals WORLDWIDE are able to use
d-identities in their daily internet practice, I look forward to meet you
all in Amsterdam for the first international face to face meeting of the
OIDF.
