As much as I value civility, I disapprove of the authoritarian 
approach to moderation. -1; community-enforced rules are more in 
keeping with UCI principles, too.

I generally tend to disapprove of democratic approaches, too, but 
this is probably because most implementations I have seen to date are 
severely flawed; it would be more accurate to call them "the 
'democratic' approaches". Transparency (for instance, I'll freely and 
openly admit that I don't like "spam" messages on this list) and 
accountability (so everyone can confirm that the "majority of 
subscribers" who allegedly wanted someone off the list actually 
existed and actually did want someone off the list) seem both 
mutually exclusive, and complementary. The problem is widespread; 
perhaps some enterprising RP/OP vendor will exploit OpenID to offer 
list moderators (and members) a cryptographically sound means of 
safely practicing democratic principles on their lists?
