I think if you're serious about your concerns, you should take a look at the
efforts that have been made to address this issue and help to push OpenID
2.1 forward, which, among other things, proposes allowing email-style
identifiers to be used in OpenID flows:

General OpenID usability is something that we're attempting to address this
year; we're certainly aware of these issues, and the best way to make real
progress is to help by crafting specifications that express clearly how to
address the current shortcomings of the protocol.
To use another aphorism: "talk is cheap". If you are interested or vested in
the success of OpenID and believe that email addresses should be part of the
protocol, you can make a different by helping to push OpenID 2.1 forward.
