Falling imparts urgency to learning how to fly.

Most of us learned how to crawl before we learned how to walk, but 
few of us utilize crawling anymore.  It's an intermediate step, 
easier than expecting ourselves to go straight from prone positions 
to upright.

It would be good to have a secure successor to OpenID planned out 
*before* adoption becomes mainstream, though, so we can teach users 
on our way down; without that, with just the hope that we'll develop 
something when that time comes, it seems more like we're hurling 
ourselves off and saying "We'll improvise along the way."
