[OpenID] choosing persona during sign in

+1 on Allen's points. MyOpenID also offers persona options, but very few people use them, and they are confusing. We've deemphasized personas as well and are not encouraging their use. People will likely have a Yahoo OpenID for certain purposes and MySpace OpenIDs for other purposes, rather than having multiple personas with a given OP, at least at the given stage of development in the market.
Cheers,
Brian

This is pretty much how the Yahoo OP does it, however, the percentage of users who do this is very, very small.
We used to highlight this feature much more prominently than we do now, and we found that most people exploring this feature got really confused and lost.
Even for the users who successfully created multiple OpenIDs for their account, many users were confused as to why selecting a different OpenID than what they used previously at an RP made them go through the RP's registration flow again as a first time user.
Again, since we all know how OpenID works, it's perfectly logical that choosing a different OpenID would force the user to go through the RP's reg flow again, as a first time user, but that's just a bit too much for many people to deal with.

Hi Allen,
Why not hide the personas option for users until they explore their account settings page and see a little corner of a feature called 'personas'. If they set it up, then on future logins they'll have the option of picking their from the alternate personas. This will give the users to power as they are ready for it, without complicating the login process for the new users.

Having a OP-NASCAR to kick off the flow, followed by a Persona-NASCAR on the OP's approval screen seems a bit much.
Given that many OPs give away free accounts, and users are not prevented from having multiple accounts, I don't really see the point of a Persona NASCAR.

I imagine several clumps of icons, each group having in common a single identifier, so the user can visually select which other RP's may learn about their new activities, or elect to use a new identifier instead. The similarity between this "solution" and a known problem ("Nascar") doesn't seem like a good sign, though.
