Why compete? Are the two technologies mutually incompatible?

More importantly, do they even seek to address the same user *need*?

I think some users will embrace this, and some users won't. Just as
some users will embrace OpenID, and some won't. Like social networks,
you don't have to stop using everything else just because you start
using one. With different technologies catering to different
use-cases, that would be STUPID; we create technology to fit *all*
our needs, not recreate ourselves to fit the limits of our technology.

Let this "Wave" do what it means to do (there may still be
competition, from Mesh), and let's focus on OpenID doing what *it*
means to do. Users will decide how much of each they want, but would
probably be disappointed if OpenID ended up not providing what it had
promised, just because of some idea that its purpose was to keep Wave
away from users, instead of being useful technology in its own right.
