IMHO it's about traction.
OpenID is a about single identity over the Internet, not about micro
blogging and whatever facilitates people learning more about that can only
be advantageous in the longer term of open technologies.
If no-one hears the story it would as well be a closed technology.

It's funny that open, distributed web advocates prefer Twitter to the
much more sustainable, futureproof, open and smart OpenMicroBlogging
(with Laconica being the only implementation as of now).
