You can register for a Google account using an email address as your Google
Account identifier.
And you can log into a Google Group using your Google Account.
And if your forget your Google Account password, you can reset it by proving
ownership of your email address.
Since resetting your password is the same thing as logging in, you can
already login by proving ownership of your email address.
So therefore, Google Groups could streamline their UX by letting users prove
ownership of their email address via OpenID, assuming that the user's email
provider has an OpenID interface.
