[OpenID] Windows Live ID OpenID CTP Status Update (August 2009)

That's a good idea, Chris. I'll work on putting together some highlights from our experience implementing the RP with Google and GMX.

It's worth highlighting this bit from the Microsoft post:

"OpenID does not support a network sign-out function as part of its protocol, which can mean that users are left in a state that differs from what they might assume. For example, Windows Live ID users who sign out of an OpenID site might expect to be completely signed out of their account, because that is what happens on all other Windows Live ID-enabled sites."

This post is very useful, and one of the more elaborate from one of the majors. I want to commend Microsoft for providing the amount of information that they did, and for sharing their findings (not with data, but still, the takeaways are generally useful).

I would be very happy if Facebook, Yahoo, and Google all did the same. Clearly folks have had some questions and challenges dealing with OpenID on Google Apps for Your Domain, and it would be useful to understand where the confusion is coming from so that we could work to address it.

In general, I find Microsoft's experience sobering - from both a privacy and usability perspective. The things that are valued by the UCI community seem to need to be jettisoned left and right because regular folks just don't grok it. These things are important to consider - and merely complaining about the loss of such features or the diminishment of certain priorities does us no good.

Allen Tom, Steven Jackson and (I think) Luke Shepard have all been working on the user experience of OpenID for several months now, and it's unclear to me what the path to seeing that work adopted or reviewed is.

Microsoft is clearly making progress here - and it would behoove the OpenID community, I believe, to take note of their lead and consider how we can learn more about how OpenID is actually performing in the wild and how it's being adopted and used (or not).
