Yeah, back to UX.
I definitely see your point. I guess I'm coming at it from what *I* would
have liked in that café in Chile :)

That is a fair point, but note that I've chosen to identify myself in
this way. As we've established, I don't care about people knowing that
I'm English and that English is my primary language.
Most people use generic email domains like hotmail.com which aren't so
great as a basis for this. I certainly can't guess where *you're* from
from your email address.

That's possible, but I'm not sure how you'd present this to users in a
useful way. You'd basically have a checkbox for enabling a useful
feature that also carries the caveat that it'll reveal your language to
arbitrary other people. Even if a user did delve in and find that option
-- which, let's face it, most wouldn't -- I'm not sure they'd really
understand what they were enabling.
