Hi Johannes,
> How did those people all learn about it?

Various factors. For example, introduction of OpenID based social graph into
the internet by mixi had a lot of impact in the market. (It also produced a
lot of press exposure. Also, many people got exposed to the term "OpenID"
because it was prominantly displayed in each members' page in mixi.")

Bottom line is, I suppose it has got to do with the concerted effort of
people.
I say "concerted effort". All the people from OpenID community, Liberty
Alliance, Certificate Authorities, Internet Service Providers, Academics,
Government, etc. were working together to promote "Federated Identity"
including OpenID in Japan. (I do not feel like this is happening in the
U.S.)

Some of the activities are listed below:

   1. Marketing push by OpenID Japan so that there will be "OpenID" related
articles constantly on various press. Also, we have visited well over 100
   major companies with internet services.
   2. Series of technical seminar "OpenID Tech Night", hosted by OpenID
   Japan, sponsored by various parties
   3. "Identity Conference/identity drinking party" hosted by "identity
community" - not only OpenID but also Liberty and InfoCard people.
   4. Liberty Alliance Seminars, where OpenID and InfoCard people are
   constantly invited as speakers.
   5. Unified marketing message across the groups: "OpenID/Liberty/InfoCards
are not fighting each other. They serve different purpose/market for the
time being, and are working together towards 'Harmonization'"
   6. Consensus among the community to make OpenID safe: Make it HTTPS only,
overview on the effort like PAPE, TX, Assurance Frameworks, Reputation,
   etc.
   7. Aggressive and innovating introduction of OpenID by the internet
services. (e.g., JAL, mixi, Rakuten, each involving innovative use of OpenID
   technology)

By the way, could you point me to the Yahoo! study number please? These
days, I have very limited time so I would appreciate it very much!
