 That'd be key, surely. Certainly, it's why I still require email addresses
for apps I build.

Just because usage of email is (or may be) changing, I don't think we can
expect it to disappear any time soon. It is the most appropriate format for
medium length delivery of personalised content (although I'm happy to
examine any other options you think met those conditions).

I'm very much for accommodating email in a more concrete fashion within
OpenID systems.
