So the OpenID community will be retracting, or at least
modifying, their statement that a benefit of OpenID is
that one can chose their own OP? But that's beside the
point; see below.

Y'all have missed the point. The question, which was Socratic,
I suppose, was about the choice being offered at this particular
site. The question was not about what OpenID does, nor was it
about its claimed value, nor was it a criticism of OpenID.
