I think this is overstating it. There are plenty of engineering
problems left. However ...
I fully agree that for OpenID to take the next few steps in broader
adoption, our gut reaction in the community and in the foundation has
to change from "let's create/update another spec" to defining the
brand, articulating and communicating the value proposition in
language that non-technical decisionmakers can understand and so we
can get adoption with people other than technologists, defining and
executing on effective market outreach programs, implementing an
organizational structure that consistently delivers without depending
on the heroic efforts of a few dedicated individuals, etc. etc.
The engineering problems that should be tackled are the ones in
support of that goal; not the other way around.
The reality, however, is that so far too few people on the (past) OIDF
board have shared this view, nor taken proactive steps in this
direction in 2008. I would strongly encourage all members to consider
this needed shift in emphasis of the OIDF going into 2009, and vote
accordingly in the board election. Even if you are a convinced techie
and hate marketing ;-) please consider that having at least enough
individuals on the OIDF board that it can act in this direction might
be a good thing for OpenID as a whole.
