[OpenID] This is not a company election

I think since pretty much day one there has always been some level of
commercial interest . so, I agree - almost everyone has some tie. Having
spoken with some people toda (hence no email during the email exchanges)
fairly well versed in technology but with little direct commercial interest
in OpenID and having to spend quite a lot of time trying to convince them of
the benefits (against FB Connect etc), I'd really welcome a more commercial
view on the technology.
I am but once small voice, but people are asking me whether the process of
making OpenID work (not technically btw) is so great in comparison to the
leverage of something like FB Connect that there are fundamental questions
on sustainability over the short and long terms. Please note I am simply
passing on what the people I spoke to believe :)
I've not said the words "open" and "stack" so many times in one day, but I
think people are looking (especially now) on whether there are any
*relative* tangible benefits to the technology. I believe there ARE in terms
of openness but I think people are looking to see something(s) they can
point at as an example.
There are two things important to me in the elections (and I have two votes
right):
1. Can we start to map out some commercial roadmaps, whilst not
compromising the Openness
2. More International involvement

Fair question. Of the 17 community member candidates, nearly all of us have
ties to companies or organizations with vested interests in the success of
OpenID, which shouldn't surprise anyone. In fact, we should want that -
passion, energy, and ongoing commitment come from vision and driving for
success.
And as anyone who works at JanRain will tell you, our engineers run the
company - I'm just corporate overhead ;-)
Like many of us, I also have hundreds of usernames and passwords for various
accounts on the web, along with associated profiles, reputations, and social
networks. I've also worked for companies that had websites where we wanted
to create better user experiences, form closer bonds to our
customers/members, and monetize the relationships with our customers with
more sales or higher CPMs.
So I'm coming at this position with the vantage point of an end user, an RP,
an OP, and a technology platform provider - which I believe can be a helpful
perspective. I've been involved with online identity back to 1996 when I
was at NetAngels where we were developing bookmarking management and
collaborative filtering technology to help people find websites, people, and
products that were interesting and relevant based on their profiles, stated
interest, and online activities. I worked in the area of enterprise SSO at
Oblix, which was eventually acquired by Oracle and rolled into their
identity management platform offerings. At CheckFree, among other things I
worked on multi-factor authentication solutions for the websites of banks
and financial institutions. So online identity, authentication, profiles,
and security are not new endeavors for me.
And, as I'd imagine all the other candidates would, I'd certainly want to
continue on as a member of the OIDF board even if I left JanRain for some
reason down the road. When I talk to family, friends, and colleagues about
what I do, they all say - great, can't wait for that to be a reality because
I hate having to manage all those accounts and profiles, the web should be
easier. That's what want to help make happen.
Cheers,
Brian

+1
Brian: I think it behooves the community for you to clarify if you are
running as an individual representing your interest in OpenID, or if this is
motivated by being CEO of JanRain at this point in time. You will continue
to hold this community seat even if you leave JanRain. Is that the
commitment you are making?
Nat, Allen, Eran and Eric have also indicated a corporate affiliation. Would
the rest of you clarify?
Myself, I will continue to have an interest and represent the community
wether I work at Microsoft or not.
As some history, David, Scott and Martin have all continued to represent the
community and sit on the board even though their employer changed.

This is not an election of companies to the board, it is an election of
individuals. Brian Kissel running as an individual for a board seat is one
thing, and something that I would support, but time and time again I see
indications that Brian is actually running for a board seat for his company
JanRain and that does not sit well with me.

Dear candidate.
Please identify your main blogsite's main pagesas a URL, to this
general at openid.net list. Please authorize me to report on whether your blog
site supports delivery of an authenticated comment, using openid (1 or 2). I
will test it (using myopenid) and report back.
Snorri's blog, for example, appears to feature 3 vendor-specific ways of
logging in to leave him a comment on his blogsite. None of them are
(obviously) OpenID powered. It may actually be possible to use an openid,
but I could not see how (e.g. an OpenID logo).

It's time for all candidates to act, and be seen clearly to adopt openid. I
will not counsel the member I advise to vote for a Candidate who (a)
operates a blogsite and (b) that site does not actually prominently feature
openid commenting/signin.
If you have an argument against this position, be free to argue a defense on
your blogsite.

Dear OpenID Community and dear OIDF Members,
I am inviting you to read this post on my blog to remind you of the process
and importance of voting. Your vote is critical for the future of OpenID in
2009.http://snorrigiorgetti.com/blog/2008/12/openid-foundation---the-new-boa

Please remember that you can take advantage of the next two weeks to ask
questions to the Candidates, just as Eddy Nigg did.
Regards
-Snorri
