One of the reasons for doing the extension is to get identity in the
browser "figured out" ... what will it look like? How do you include
any/all providers? How do you make it more usable? Ideally the work
product of this will be an extension but in the future, this (IMHO)
functionality should be baked into the browsers. To do that, we have
to start somewhere and that's what we're doing with IDIB.
As for Seatbelt, I agree, its actually a great product but it is not
open source. I'd love to use Seatbelt as a basis for this work if
Verisign would be willing to open source it ... :-)
