Well, I am not sure I understand the question so let me tell you about a
mistake I made when we first made our OpenID classes... We created 1.1
authentication classes and we hard coded SREG into that as we needed to
obtain SREG based information at authentication. Actually SREG (and AX)
are extensions and you can authenticate a URi without needing any
extensions hence, we had to build in development time to back out
extensions from our classes and create an extension mechanism to allow
extensions such as AX to be dropped in.

So the answer is, yes, you can get rid of SREG and still have a
perfectly valid authentication class. However, in reality you are ill
advised to remove SREG from authentication if you want to request
information held in SREG fields because most OP's and consumers use SREG
as standard.

Not that I know of and this creates another small headache. The consumer
can request both SREG and AX and at the consumer end you can bin SREG
data if you receive AX data, however at the OP end the person is now
presented with a request for AX:email and SREG:email, hence to the eye
it looks like something has gone wrong because the person sees what
appears to be duplicate information requested.

Personally I think the OpenID community should push to make SREG legacy
in favour of AX, but to make that happen you'll have to persuade a lot
of people to put in development time to their OpenID solutions.
