"The only way" seems a bit quick to conclude ;).
By the way, wouldn't this be the same game-able data, seeing as
it's the OP which is the one with highest interest in gaming the
system?
Perhaps the RP should be the one pinging. That could easily
be built into the client-side libraries.
If the OP and RP both ping, it's easy for server to collate and
remove suspect pings. (An OP being its own RP is a special case
which we might have to skip for simplicity.)

Anonymous by choice, perhaps? Several OPs have self-published
usage numbers for a long time.
