I've actually thought more about it (i didn't get to go to the presentation as I wished)

The ability for a web rp to know that a carrier is attesting to an openid that is implicitely bound to a live sim/phone registration is well worth having. That can always be traced back to the phone num (and legal person), as and when necessary. It brings a whole slew of useful legal processes with it.
