The upgrade to SREG 1.1 was intended to make it compatible with  
OpenID 2.0.

You are correct in the above, but it was the only way to keep the  
same namespace URI for both SREG versions without creating  
interoperability problems.

Specifically, in openid4java we're always forcing the alias to  
'sreg', even for SREG1.1 / OpenID 2.0. Maybe this would be best  
placed as a RECOMMENDation in the SREG1.1 spec.
