Thx Dick,

I should have mentioned your plugin - which is impressive - so I'm 
glad I had another look.
Given all this, it seems that the problem is more or less solved for 
Firefox users.
The fact that there will doubtless be further innovation on that 
platform must be a good thing.
Wouldn't it be nice if something similar became available for other 
popular browsers?
(I can't remember how it happened that they all have comparable basic 
auth capability but that is also a good thing.)
