It's worth noting that Martin, for one, is (or at least was) a vocal
supporter of canonical IDs:

I actually sympathize with the privacy concerns expressed by you. In fact,
canonical IDs would work just fine alongside directed IDs. Let me explain.
Suppose your company is my OP. I could easily have two (or more) identities
bound to my account: a globally unique one and a directed one. I could use
my globally unique identity on technology forums and the directed one on
sites like Zooomr or LiveJournal.
On a side note, Simon addressed the identity correlation issue on this list
just recently. I believe this should be reflected by Relying Party Best
Practices.
