Could someone provide me with some links to past
discussions of the problem of addressing without a
single root.

One always has to wind up implementing some large part
of Zooko's triangle, even with a centralized system -
for example bookmarks and instant messaging buddies are
identified using local, rather than global names, and
obvious in principle Zooko's triangle works fine without
centralized name allocation, if the global and unique
names are gibberish in a namespace large enough to avoid
collisions. However ditching the center altogether has
quite a lot of consequences.

As with basing identity on public private key pairs, it
is hard to do right.
