[OpenID] OpenID Trademark Issues

As many of you are already aware, the OpenID Foundation recently
chartered a trademark committee. This committee is tasked with
defining policies related to the trademarks (and perhaps other kinds
of "marks") held (or to be held) by the OpenID Foundation, including:
  - what the trademarks stand for
  - how the trademarks are used and not used by the OpenID Foundation
itself, and related to work facilitated by the OpenID Foundation such
as protocol development
  - how the trademarks are licensed (or not) to third parties (e.g.
in product names)

For example, it's clear that we don't want anybody to market products
called "The only legal source of OpenIDs" supporting only a
proprietary protocol. (Hypothetical extreme case for illustration
purposes only)

We've reached out already to a number of parties who have an interest
in contributing to policies that put the interest of the entire
OpenID ecosystem as the first priority (over, if there is a conflict,
the interest of a single entity, such as a commercial company).

If you think you feel strongly one way or another about what might or
might not come out of this committee, I invite you to raise your hand
(i.e. send me e-mail) at this time.

Thanks,

Johannes Ernst
