Installation struggles - debian, no captcha image with php5

Hello everyone,

First of all, must say I was pretty impressed with what I saw.. okay, 
now to the not so pleasant part.

I have Debian Sid, with php5, php5-gd and php5-mysql installed on apache 
2 - captcha image is not working. Just to make things bit more 
interesting, there is another application on same webserver which also 
uses php5-gd and that one is working perfectly fine...

any suggestions where to look for solution?
