Python consumer session

I have a question regarding the python consumer API by JanRain.  I don't totally understand what the session dictionary is used for.  I thought it had something to do with storing the nonce as explained on the website, but that appears to be handled by the store interface.  Instead a "token" is stored.  I'm confused what that token is for.
