Mailman has a feature called topics, it could be an alternative to  
start too many separate lists:
"By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the  
mailing list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages. If a  
message matches one of your selected topics, then you will get the  
message, otherwise you will not."

I never used mailman with topics so I have no idea how well it is  
working or if it is practical or not. Does anyone have experience  
with this feature?
