OpenID & MediaWiki: What's the current state?

I recently installed MediaWiki 1.8.2 because I kind of thought that
OpenID with it would be easy.

I first tried the OpenID extension, but that failed with a complaint
when it came back from the authentication, the URL it gave appended a
"?lotsofstuff" to rewritten shorter URL and, since I think I prefer
the user experience that the JanRain version gives, rather than pursue
fixing that I popped over to openidenabled.com and grabbed that patch.

The JanRain patch I used is from
http://www.openidenabled.com/software/mediawiki/janrain.diff/view. I
first looked at applying it by hand, got kind of confused, did a quick:

   cd flutterby_net/mediawiki-1.8.2
   patch -p1 < patch

and got a whole mess o' rejects. A few made sense, but... It looks
like the structure of SpecialUserlogin.php has changed since these
patch files were created.

Anyone else playing with this? Should I go back to the OpenID
extension and try just remapping the bad URLs in my web server?

Thanks!

Dan
