I finally managed to dig up the proposal for a different little icon for
OpenID posted on LiveJournal:

This design does the inversion of the orange and the white like you
suggest here, but does it in a circle instead. I'm not sure the circle
works too well given that there's already a curved shape inside, but I
think the main logo inside it remains reasonably distinct.
I played around with combinations of the orange background from the RSS
logo and renderings of the logo on orange.
Several variations are attached. The first two were pixel-painted from
jc's on-orange logo, but the rest of them are from ydnar's vector art.
Since I was just tinkering there's not really any systematic variation
here, but I just thought I'd throw these variations out there to see if
people think any of them are workable. Hopefully then a real graphic
designer will do it properly. :)
