Hi all,
As we approach our final DADE meeting of the year the cochairs have spent
time talking about what 2026 will bring for DADE CG. But before we do
that, I want to reflect on what we’ve accomplished in the year since DADE
CG was chartered.
First, DADE CG brought individuals from various backgrounds together at a
common venue to discuss a difficult topic. We’ve spent time discovering
how technology impacts the deceased and those who knew them. Best
practices for documenting your digital estate have been published, and a
comprehensive white paper was released (both in public preview). We’ve
opened the door to discussions about digital estates within the identity
and standards community and how our shared work can have a broad impact on
the digital ecosystems we use every day.
As we look toward 2026, I find myself asking, “What’s next?” The DADE CG
co-chairs (myself, Eve, and Mike) discussed this on our last few planning
calls. Here’s how we’re planning to take DADE CG into 2026.
We’ll start the near year with a focus on two strategic items:
1. Developing the initial use cases and privacy requirements for future
DADE protocol(s)
2. Developing a charter for a DADE working group (WG)
Moving into 2026, we want to reposition ourselves to begin the development
of protocols to support DADE use cases. In the white paper, we teased some
ideas about the DADE use cases, privacy requirements, and even a high level
protocol. However, in order for us to develop protocols under the OIDF, we
need to charter a working group. The current DADE CG does not have the
scope to be able to develop protocols.
What does this mean for DADE CG? Honestly, we’re not 100% sure. The
co-chairs do not have the capacity to run both a WG and a CG. At our last
discussion, the co-chairs agreed we need to hold space for continued
discussions along the lines of the DADE CG. We also recognize that DADE CG
members may not be as invested in the protocol work of DADE WG (assuming it
is chartered). One of the proposed ways to manage this is to dedicate some
meetings toward CG-oriented discussions while keeping most of the meetings
focused on protocol level work.
As always, we want your input. How would you like a future DADE WG to
operate? Do you think a separate DADE CG should continue to meet? Can we
move the DADE CG work into a future DADE WG?
On tomorrow’s call, I look forward to discussing what the future looks like
for DADE.
Thank you to all of the DADE CG members for helping make 2025 a successful
year for the CG.
I hope you have a safe holiday season and a happy new year!
