Thanks Chris, this is great. I do hope others will join the marketing mailing list and share on the wiki to help us create the 2009 marketing plan.

Cheers,

Brian

Thanks Brian. This is a great start!

I've recorded these on the wiki for now:

https://openid.pbwiki.com/Marketing

Would definitely be great to start thinking about planning specific agenda/action items and tasks to take these on in 2009!

Agreed we need to get more systematic about this. It's one of the things we want to pursue across all the committees in 2009. Off the top of my head, here are a few things that I have heard requested. If there are volunteers to take them on, that would be great:

* An update to Joseph Smarr's tutorial on how to deploy OpenID on your website using the open source libraries

* ROI analysis for various use cases of OpenID - what are revenue enhancement or costs reduction impacts of OpenID, how much will it cost to deploy, and consequently what is the return on investment (ROI) for deploying OpenID on my site

* Specific case studies on the benefits of OpenID - site X saw registrations go up by 15%, site Y saw forgotten password costs go down by 10%, site Z gathered additional customer account registration data by consuming SREG data, etc.

* Volunteers to create more content for the OIDF website for prospective RPs - this would also involve interviewing RPs to find out what content they'd like to see on the OIDF website

* An overview of SREG and AX and how to use them for RPs

* Best practices for RP deployment - this goes beyond the "how to" in the first bullet, to discuss things like UX, linking OpenIDs to existing accounts, managing disparate data from multiple sources, etc.

* Benchmarking the websites of other SIGs and foundations to see

o what website capabilities they offer that OIDF should, how we could improve navigation, organization, search, etc. on our site

o what programs they offer for members that we might consider for our members

I'm sure others on the list have suggestions on things that the OIDF could/should be doing to help drive adoption and usage from a marketing perspective, so I'd suggest those people who are interested should subscribe to the marketing mailing list and we can start developing our plans for 2009.

Cheers,

Brian

Thanks Brian.

Is there a list of ongoing marketing activities and a list of goals, objectives or measurements we're using to gauge our progress?

I found the mailing list, but it looks dead:

http://openid.net/pipermail/marketing/

Jsut as with the CRC, I'd love to see a list of what's going on with this committee on the wiki. I'm happy to transcribe what information is available so that we can get ourselves sorted and our priorities assigned.

I feel like there's been lots of chatter on the OpenID mailing lists lately but not enough meaty opportunities to get people involved in owning a piece of the pie.

If we can start bite-chunking the work and assigning it to some of the more active posters on the OpenID lists, I think, given the free time some of us seem to have available, we might be able to make incredible progress (think: we're leveraging the opportunity provided by Cory Doctorow's cognitive surplus!).

I believe we've spent $10K with Market Focus so far (Johannes?) and BBC sponsored the meals and facilities at the NYC meeting (many thanks to Zac Bjelogrlic and the BBC team for their leadership and generosity). One key next step was the UX Summit sponsored by Yahoo. There have been separate related initiatives by many of the OPs focused user profile data management. Some preliminary discussions have happened around business and legal frameworks, but don't know that there is much to share on that yet. I'd imagine next steps will be determined by the Customer Research and Marketing Committees in the context of next year's operating plan and budget.

Ok, thanks for that.

Do we have any additional documentation or reports?

I'll transcribe elements of that presentation to the wiki in the meanwhile.

It'd be good to know if this work is ongoing, and if so, how to get involved or what outcomes are expected as well as how much was spent on the deliverables we've currently received.

Yes, one public summary from IIW in Mt. View: http://www.slideshare.net/bkkissel/openid-foundation-market-research-report-from-iiwb-2008-presentation This is just a summary from a more detailed report that Johannes initiated with an outside market research firm named Market Focus. Market Focus attended the Content Provider Advisory Committee meeting, then did a series of one-on-one interviews with several of the participants as well as other RPs, prospective RPs, and OPs.

Re the CRC work: I personally got on the phone with every board member that I could get a hold of in the week before I asked for funding the external consultant -- you will recall that you and I talked about it, too, on the phone, prior to the board meeting. So I'm at loss to understand what you mean by not having been consulted.

This is a separate topic, but I searched around for the results of the CRC committee and all I came up with was this page (ported from the original wiki):

https://openid.pbwiki.com/Customer-Research-Committee

Are the results of this study available?
