And when you extend them, how does anyone else know what it means?

Most of the web applications take name/value pairs from form data.  
The URI model where each attribute has it's own schema maps well to  
the existing paradigms, and it is hard to get simpler then a string  
for parsing.

Curious, have you looked at Attribute Exchange?
